Boris Johnson speaks out at Westfield Stratford City

From 2011, up and down the Rue de Rivoli, they'll be shouting "Le Jean Louis de Stratford ici allons!" so says Boris Johnson.

London's ebullient Mayor bounced into Westfield Stratford City today for the topping out ceremony of the new John Lewis.

Standing on the wind whipped roof of the new store, overlooking the 2012 Olympics site he said, thanks to government policies of masterly incompetence, Carla Bruni can now come to London and buy a Hermes Kelly Caleche for 40% cheaper in London than Paris. Not that he knows what a Kelly Caleche is mind, but he thinks its a handbag.

The point being that he thinks Stratford City represents an astonishing commercial proposition and Eurostar will have an overwhelming finanicial obligation to stop at Stratford.

You can see the speech in full below. I really recommend it, as whatever you think of Boris he's a corker of a public speaker.

If you're interested in the Olympics story then Paul Norman, EG's Olympic guru, blog is definitely worth a read.
