How do you brand Plymouth - don't ask the locals

4465701158_9963a954cb.JPGA boat or a seagull? These are the two predictable favourites to become Plymouth's new logo after brand consultancy Lloyd Northover was handed the task of creating a new public image for the city, EG's David Thame writes.

The company, which has already rebranded Belfast (a big B shaped like a heart) and Dubai's financial district (an abstract diamond) are expected to come up with something funky for Plymouth.

Local folk remain deeply sceptical. Vigorous debate on one local newspaper website suggested that a track-suited chav might be a more suitable symbol of the city than the inevitable ship or breaking wave.

Slogans suggested by Plymptonians included: "Plymouth - helping police with their enquiries" and "Plymouth - it's not big and it's not clever."

EG's Somerset, Devon & Cornwall Focus is published on May 15
