Disappearing Resolution

In October 2007 the sculpture Resolution by Anthony Gormley was unveiled in the City. It appeared on this very blog, which is probably one of the few places you're still going to be able to see it...because after only a few months on the street...Resolution has gone.

The odd structure in the middle of this house does have a function. It's the water tank. The idea is that it cools the living room during summer, collects the rain water, and holds the roof up. Designed by Paul Morgan Architects

This is a story about a farmer who, behind this wall of hay bales...

...so that he could avoid going through the planning system.

He moved in, waited 4 years (with the hay bales still in place) and then in April 2007 finally revealed the structure to the world. The 4 year time period is crucial, because if nobody objects to the development within that time you can apply for a certificate of lawfulness (retrospective planning permission for works already carried out) which is exactly what the farmer did. Great plan, one massive oversight. In order for people to object to a development, first they have to be able to see it...and the farmers name...Mr Fidler.
