Laddish behaviour at Langley Point launch

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

langleyFINAL CGI - portrait.jpgTypical! Office launches are a bit like buses these days: you wait for ages, then two come along at once. This Friday Calthorpe Estates will be wooing agents and prospective tenants with its 106,000 sq ft Calthorpe House in Edgbaston with guest speaker GP, writer and comedian Dr Phil Hammond.

Yesterday Trigram Properties, Folkes Holdings and Corum Property Investments thought that best way to turn heads for the launch of their 44,350 sq ft Langley Point on Bath Row would be to invite Stuart Ladds. Who he? You know, Stuart Ladds, head of relocation & regional strategy, Government Estates Transformation, Office of Government Commerce (trips off the tongue, doesn't it?).

The EG West Mids sentiment survey needs you!

green-shoots_1422859c.jpgCome on tell us how you're feeling. There's just three days left for you to take part in Estates Gazette's West Midlands Sentiment Survey for Q3 2009 - click here to take part.

We'd like as many of you as possible to fill in this completely anonymous survey by Thursday 24th September, the results of which will be published as part of the West Midlands Focus on 17th October. The survey is tracking sentiment about the property market and wider economy among the West Midlands property fraternity thoughout the course of the year.

Have you seen any of those much heralded green shoots? Have we reached the bottom of the market yet? Will we see a double-dip? Please share your views with us via the survey and if you'd like an attributable quote, just contact Stacey Meadwell on 0207 911 1819 or email: stacey.meadwell@rbi.co.uk and tell her your thoughts.

Keith Steventon BNPP.jpg With everyone searching for the answers to survive the recession and beyond research launch events are more popular than ever. Another impressive amount of guests turned out for the latest - BNP Paribas Real Estate's Economic Forecast Seminar held in Birmingham yesterday.

BNPRE's jovial head of UK research Keith Steventon enthralled the 120-strong gathering with statistics to support his in-depth look at the UK property market between 2009 and 2014 (see EGi news story here).

9/9/09 - literally for the EG's Brum office

Brum office fire jpeg.jpgLittle did I know when travelling to Birmingham yesterday morning, that the day would turn into a major drama involving seven fire crews, two incedent response units, paramerdics and the police!

Wild night out - the morning after

The Birmingham market turned out in force last night for Estates Gazette's annual Birmingham Focus Reception.

Agents favourite, the Metro Bar, was packed to the rafters with the region's finest, all keen to share their views of the market over a well-earned orange juice (!).

Needless to say EG heard all sorts of interesting tales by the end of the evening which were digested over a delicious and hearty curry at Asha's curry house on the corner of Edmund Street later in the evening.

After which, a walk along Newhall Street resulted in an invitation by hardcore party animals Nurton Development's Rupert Young and Antringham Development's Tim Blairs who were 'going on' to another venue.

The duo were last seen climbing into a black cab and heading off down Newhall Street.

Sore heads this morning boys...?

Don't forget to get in touch if you would like to take part in EG's West Midlands Focus the synopsis is on the Focus blog and a podcast I recorded on the night can found by clicking here. In the meantime here is a sneak peek at some of the pictures - more coming soon.

Wild Night Out

champagne pic.jpgBirmingham property professionals will be among the first in the country to meet EG's new editor Damian Wild together with myself, EG's publisher Geoff Hadwick and other key members of the EG team at the Estates Gazette Birmingham Focus Reception.

Yes, our brand new grande fromage is heading to the Midlands to find out more about our lovely region and meet up with over 100 of the area's key movers and shakers at the Metro Bar & Grill from 5.30pm onwards tonight.

The editorial team will be probing guests for the latest news (and gossip!) ahead of the West Midlands Focus which will hit your desks with a satisfying thud on 17th October.

We'll also be launching the West Midlands Synopsis at the event which will be available online from Friday.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Chek-ered History

Thumbnail image for Chek Whyte pic.jpgOnly a year ago he was bravely talking about his plans for a 50-storey tower block in the middle of Nottingham. But yesterday it emerged that the East Midlands' developer and entrepreneur Chek Whyte was declared bankrupt last Friday.

Of course this is the second time round for ex-Channel 4 Secret Millionaire Whyte who first learned about the ups and downs (more precisely: the downs) of the business world almost exactly a decade ago. He was barred from being a company director then, this time he has HM Revenue & Customs on his case for a reported £1.6m unpaid tax bill, as well as others, but it could be worse.

Learning his lesson the first time Whyte set up a labyrinthine business structure that is likely to mean that his personal assets and possibly others besides are well out of reach of his clamouring creditors. In addition, his 10-year company directorship ban expires this year. Which may possibly be why Whyte last month backed out of a voluntary repayment agreement that would have paid off his companies' debts over a period of years?

Whyte is nothing if not resilient; he has been in tight scrapes before and come out the other side none the worse for wear. So I fully expect him to reappear within the next year confidently talking up his next property project. Whether the market will be charmed by his patter is another matter, but history suggests that it probably will.
