The big bashes back in Britain

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for brit pop.jpgYes, we’ve all heard the stories that enough champagne is drunk during MIPIM week to put the Cannes film festival to shame. But back in Blighty we’re doing our bit too.

MIPIM week is always a bit of a weird week for those of us left manning the home desks. Property bods say they’ve either got their heads down while the phones are quiet and everyone is away (although increasingly that’s not been the case) or it’s been used as a big excuse for long boozy lunches (after all that’s what they’re all doing out in Cannes – non?)

But there’s also the big “not at MIPIM” bashes. Unsurprisingly, Drivers Jonas Deloitte is holding one of the most extravagant NICE (Not in Cannes Event). After its very public spat with MIPIM’s organisers, it’s going to the races today and is taking 35 of its capital investment clients from the Birmingham and London offices to the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival. It’s secured a private suite and will be hosting a champagne reception, and lunch before the racing starts.

It says it will be using its marketing budgets “elsewhere eg. client entertaining, EXPO Real and Rugby Sevens”

The regions are also getting involved. On Thursday both Leeds and Manchester hit the bars.

PR firm MC2 is hosting its second Mipim in Manchester event. On top of the usual evening do, this year they’re also hosting a breakfast event where office furniture designer Steelcase‘s regional manager David McCall will talk about Frank Lloyd Wright, described by MC2 as a legend. Guests will also have the chance to see an original Steelcase/Frank Lloyd designed table and chair, “a rare opportunity to see a piece of design history”.

At night, the more usual, and presumably more messy, networking starts. They can’t promise the sunshine, they say, “but have an uber stylish venue  (Epernay Champagne Bar, Great Northern Tower), champagne and a great guest list”

Over the Pennines, in Leeds the King Sturge Alternative Mipim event is entering its fourth year. It’s a ticket only event kicking off at 1pm at La Grillade, a French restaurant in Leeds, to raise money for PhysCap, a Leeds-based charity for physically handicapped children. King Sturge, Santander, developers Marshall CDP, and solicitors Hammonds have all put £1,000 behind the bar.

Besides the money for charity (last year they raised £1,500) the firm says it wanted to generate business in Yorkshire without having to jet off to the South of France. “and yes, as with previous years I expect a very late finish!” said one of the organisers.

More refined affairs will be taking place at lunch on Friday. JLL is taking all us starving journalists out for what is now a firm fixture on the calendar, its alternative Mipim press lunches, but is also hosting a client lunch at Hannover Square on the Friday.

And Liverpool is holding its own “Cannes Do”. Billed as the best property event of the year it promises a relaxed informal afternoon of food, drink and entertainment. It’s a sold-out, ticket-only lunch hosted by Professional Liverpool Property at No 1 Tithebarn with comedian Peter Edge lightening the mood. Drinks at the Raquet Club will follow for those “hardy individuals”

Oh, I miss those JLL NICE lunches. They were always a highlight of not being in Cannes…

Birmingham is also hosting a ‘not at MIPIM’ lunch on Friday lunchtime. Jilly Cosgrove’s Barques Design has organised it and it’s a sell out with many names on the wait list. Last year’s event was a very messy ‘do’ I hear!
