Andrew Altman - so far so good ...

andrewaltman.jpgAs predicted, a wave of interviews with the new Olympic Park Legacy Company chief executive Andrew Altman has begun today with an illuminating piece in the Evening Standard.

Sadly from my point of view the LDA decided the Standard was the best place to start - I'm told my scheduled spot next Tuesday is the first interview with the "trade" as the likes of me are kindly termed.
Altman's first move is clearly going to be to pour cold water on the idea that Spurs are going to be moving to the Olympic Stadium any time soon or that ITV are about to take up residence in the media centre.

There's "no silver bullet" says suggesting that a deal with a property developer or even the creation of a fund around the giant opportunity is a long way off.
Quite rightly he is managing expectations from the start particularly as difficult negotiations over who takes control of the debt accrued by the LDA buying the 500 acre site continue.
Was he told in his interview that the LDA was going to decide it did not want to keep the debt on its books, especially since Ken Livingstone made much of the returns the agency would make when the land is sold on post-Games? I very much doubt it.
The pragmatism fits in neatly with what I am hearing across the industry from people how have met him. To a man and woman they have been extremely impressed with how calm and collected and "up to speed" with the various complex issues he appears.
I am told that at his initial interview he impressed because he had clearly walked the area from back to front beforehand.
Will be updating on my own impressions after interviewing him on Tuesday, but so far so good must be the conclusion.

Any idea how much Mr Altman will be costing us? I know it (hopefully) pales into insignificance alongside the LDA's debt but it seems to be more expense...

MT Paul Norman

Actually yes. He is being paid £200,000 a year - not as much as an Estates Gazette journalist clearly, not bad either.
