What's in a domain name?

A property industry figure with a deep interest in all things Olympics who will remain nameless has alerted me to the following, which I think points to the continued robustness of the British entrepreneurial spirit, or something.

The new Olympic Park Legacy Company has launched for business with the registered email address of name@legacycompany.co.uk. A quick game of 'whois' domain searching reveals that the LDA registered the name in April 2009, which makes sense. The LDA also registered londonlegacy.co.uk, so expect to see that somewhere soon.

Further investigation of the ones that got away shows that a number of private individuals and companies since May 2007 have been looking to muscle in somehow by registering the following: olympicpark.co.uk, registered May 2007; 2012legacy.co.uk, registered in October 2007; legacy2012.co.uk, registered May 2008; london2012legacy.co.uk, registered Nov 2009; and olympiclegacy.co.uk, registered November 2009.
A shrewd move by those involved you might say. As you would expect www.london2012.co.uk is owned by LOCOG. More of a surprise is the fact that www.london2016.co.uk is registered to the British Olympic Association. Now that's confidence for you.
