Latest Olympic developments - sand pits and flat pack furniture...

Away from the Olympic Park work has now started on the beach volleyball arena at Horse Guards Parade.

Well, to be more precise, work has started on the test venue - a 1,500 seat scale model, one tenth of the size of the real thing that will be built ready for next July.

Yesterday 2,274 tonnes of sand were delivered from a quarry in Surrey to the central London site.

Keep an eye on the http://www.estatesgazette.com/videos/ website where a video of the delivery will be shown.

The sand is a special type called Redhill 28, which is apparently up to Olympic standard - never would have clocked until this point that there was non-olympic standard sand, but I guess it makes a lot of sense really.

Meanwhile, back nearer the Olympic Park there was positive news coming from Inter IKEA the investment arm of Swedish flat pack furniture giant IKEA.

They are now closing in on acquiring a further 15-acres of land just outside the South of the park next to land they acquired last July at Sugar House Lane.

The Inter IKEA plan is to create a 1,500 home development with offices, shops, hotels and community facilities.

Along with Westfield Stratford City and the multi-national bidders for the Athletes Village, iIt is yet another positive example of the international investment interest that exists in the Olympic Park.
