News reaches me (via the Peckham Peculiar) that the Wood Dene estate is finally about to kick off, with works due to commence in Spring this year. Developer Notting Hill Housing Association received planning consent back in July 2013 for 333 residential units in total, 117 of them affordable.
333 residential units going under construction (not altogether admittedly, this will probably take 2 to 3 years to complete, a build out rate of say 100-150 units per annum) is obviously a good thing. However, when you understand that the site previously housed 320 residential units, demolished back in 2007, the delight in seeing new homes built is quickly evaporated when you learn the site when complete, will provide just 13 NET new homes, and a lot less affordable ones at that. As well as the 10 years of dereliction, which has done the surrounding area no good at all.

Estate regeneration is a good thing, but when we knock the poorly built 60′s stuff down, we need to be much more ambitious, and increase the density of inner London if we are serious at upping the amount of homes built each year. 13 NET new homes over a 10 year period is derisory.
